In Full Bloom, by Logan Hicks

April 17, 2019

Our flagship gallery in Chelsea is pleased to present In Full Bloom by Logan Hicks, a collection of paintings on canvas, hand-sprayed multiples and limited edition prints.

Recognized for his unparalleled command of stencil-based aerosol painting, Logan Hicks is known as a pioneer of the medium. Hicks meticulously transforms original photographic imagery into layers of intricate stencils, allowing him to achieve a photorealistic precision with spray paint. The high contrast of light and color in Hicks’ urban, architectural and landscape scenes, evoke a visual depth reminiscent of the old masters, but with a distinctly contemporary feel. In Full Bloom is an exploration of abundant, floral scenes taken from nature, drawing inspiration from artists who came before-those who also reimagined and recreated their environments in a new light.

“While living in Paris for the past two summers I spent time wandering around, trying to view the city through the eyes of Monet, Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec. After a trip to Giverny and spending time walking through the gardens of Monet, the connection to the past was immediate. I could see the gardens, just as he did. I could see the beauty. The allure. I felt the same desire he had to paint what was in front of him. This show is my attempt to imagine the world through the eyes of the artists who have come before me. It’s an opportunity to envision how the world would look painted if techniques such as stenciling with aerosol were available during the times those artists painted. While Monet is the most visible in the show, influences from artists such as Andy Warhol, Van Gogh, Rachel Ruysch and Margaretha Haverman are also represented.” – Logan Hicks
