Invader
b. 1969, France
Invader is an unidentified, yet well-known, French street artist, whose pseudonym stems from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders. Inspired by computer pixilation during the dawn of the internet in the nineties, Invader began “freeing” these characters from their video game realities and “invading” the streets of Paris, with his body of work consisting of pixilated images of video game characters created with square mosaic tiles. Invader installations have since become desirable collectors’ pieces, to the point where some works have been stolen off of the walls upon which they were installed. Invader’s work is present in cities all across the globe and because tiles can be applied directly to walls, they are the perfect medium to accomplish his mission of street visibility on a global scale.
