Julian Opie
b. 1958, London, United Kingdom
Julian Opie (b. 1958) is a British artist who rose to prominence in the 1980s. His style combines a classical, conservative subject matter with an innovative use of available technology. He engages with art history while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of the mediums he chooses to work with. He is known to explore industrial, sculptural, and digital materials such as steel and LED lights. Coinciding with the dawn of the digital era, Opie’s reductive representations of the human form make use of the simplified visual language that we have all become well versed in. Opie distills everyday images and experiences into concise but evocative signs and pictograms.
