FAME
April 27 – May 15, 2023

Taglialatella Galleries – Toronto is pleased to present FAME, a solo show by Russell Young. The California-based, British artist has had a long-standing fascination with the dark and twisting paradox that is celebrity. Celebrity as a cultural phenomenon is as seductive as it is sinister and offers ample terrain for Young’s exploration. Glitz and glamour mask the darkness and solitude inherent to a life in the limelight. Iconic figures from the days of old Hollywood and the nights of rock n’ roll are rendered in Warholian silkscreening and doused in diamond dust. Coming of age in the underbelly of the rock n’ roll scene, Young is fuelled by an intense love for, and affinity to, music and film. He deconstructs the American Dream by way of the characters that most embody it.

FAME is an interwoven story of an American timeline and a cast of iconic characters who embody a cultural golden age.

This exhibit will offer never before seen imagery as well as the most desirable and classic pieces from the artist’s oeuvre. FAME has a rich history. It was first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai. The series then headed to London, where it made history exhibiting in the windows of luxury department store Harrods. Young is the first and only artist since Harrods was founded in 1849 to be given this honor. Young’s work is included in many prominent private and institutional collections including those of Barack Obama, David Bowie, Drake, Angelina Jolie, David Hockney, Brad Pitt, and others, as well as The Getty Collection in Los Angeles and The White House Collection in Washington, D.C. An exclusive print release will take place in conjunction with the opening of FAME featuring a novel image of Marilyn Monroe in a monumental, large-scale format on Coventry paper with a gorgeous, hand-deckled edge and finished with the artist’s signature touch of luxurious diamond dust. A short print run of just 20 editions will be available exclusively through the four international locations of Taglialatella Galleries.
