A CAPSULE COLLECTION
EXHIBITION:
September 21 – October 8, 2021
Taglialatella Galleries – Toronto is excited to present a capsule collection of works on paper by the prolific street artist, Shepard Fairey – on now until October 1 at 99 Yorkville Ave, in conjunction with the third annual edition of the Yorkville Murals Festival
Fairey is a principal figure in the street art movement. The artist’s aesthetic is born from a combination of the formal education he received at the Rhode Island School of Design and the countercultures that characterized his youth. According to a manifesto the artist published early on in his career, he was initially motivated by the desire to create imagery with no discernible meaning, divorced from the political and commercial associations to which our visual language is so inextricably linked. His styled progressed from simplified graphics into complex, richly filigreed decorative stencil patterns. It wasn’t until the late 90s that his work started to take on political undertones; a nod to propaganda posters in both style and content.
Fairey’s street art practice is motivated by the desire to reignite wonder in one’s surroundings, encouraging a deeper consideration of our urban environment. The street art activations initiated across our neighbourhood for Yorkville Murals do just that, making Fairey the perfect artist to showcase alongside the third year of the YVM Festival.
