Mateo – At the frontier of Urban art & Ancient cultures

TagTO x Mateo

February 6, 2025 – Taglialatella Galleries – Toronto is thrilled to announce that the remarkable works of Mateo, a visionary artist pushing the boundaries of urban art and traditional craftsmanship, are now on display. Mateo, born in France in 1985, is a celebrated global citizen based in Montreal, renowned for his baroque street art that draws inspiration from ornamental traditions around the world, particularly evident in his striking painted rugs.

After earning a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and working with major brands like Ubisoft and Cirque du Soleil, Mateo chose to focus on his artistic vision, experimenting with traditional motifs and materials. His innovative approach of painting on rugs transforms this revered textile art form into striking, vertical displays, prominently featuring feminine portraits that highlight the vital role of women in rug weaving.

Historically, women have been the heart of Persian rug-making, dedicating their skills to create intricate designs that tell stories of their cultures. Mateo honors these artisans by portraying their resilience and creativity, infusing each piece with the narratives, symbols, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Through his work, he elevates the art of weaving and elevates the often-overlooked contributions of women, celebrating their artistry and cultural significance.

Mateo’s artworks invite viewers to reflect on their cultural identities amidst contemporary mass culture while celebrating the rich stories woven into each piece.
